GILGIT?National Highway Authority has announced that the Khunjerab pass?tunnel will be built to facilitate the travel between China & Pakistan. Khunjerab pass is the highest paved road?in the world at 16000 feet above sea level. During the winter the road is under contineous?maintenance due to glaciers and snow fall.
In Summer too due to land slides the road gets closed?often however the new Pak-China friendship tunnel will make the travel much easier.?Pak-China friendship tunnel is some 30 kilometers from Sost on Khunjerab pass.
According to General Manager National Highway Authority, Abdullah Jan that the tunnel is part of the ongoing projects of expansion of Karakuram Highway. He told reporters here on Saturday that length of this tunnel is about 480 meter long and the project would be completed within the period of one year. He said that a Chinese firm is engaged in many projects of Karakuram Highway including the construction of tunnel.
