Butkara Stupa – Swat Valley
Located in the scenic Swat Valley, approximately 260 kilometers from Islamabad, the ancient site of Butkara is one of the most important Buddhist heritage locations in Pakistan. It forms a key highlight of our Buddhist History Tour, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the Gandhara civilisation.
Recent excavations at Butkara-I, conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Swat in collaboration with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Department of Archaeology, have brought exciting new discoveries to light. Archaeologists have uncovered previously unknown structural layers beneath existing remains, revealing that the site is even older and more complex than earlier believed.
Among the most significant findings is an earlier construction hidden beneath a major Buddhist structure, suggesting continuous religious and cultural activity over centuries. A rare silver coin from the Mauryan period has also been discovered, linking the site to one of the earliest empires of South Asia.
Excavations in the residential and workshop areas have revealed fascinating details about daily life in ancient times. Researchers have identified pottery dating back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE, along with a unique stone formation resembling a stupa, unlike anything previously found in the Swat region.
Scientific studies, including archaeobotanical analysis, indicate that the inhabitants cultivated crops such as rice and pulses, and even consumed grapes, offering insight into their diet and lifestyle.
These ongoing discoveries continue to enhance the historical importance of Butkara, confirming Swat Valley as a major centre of early Buddhist culture and ancient civilisation.
