How Tourists Got Trapped in a Flash Flood at Thak Nala, Chilas – A Tragic Warning for All Travelers

Posted on July 24, 2025

Translation & Additional Reporting by Travel & Culture Services

What Happened at Thak Nala?

Dozens of tourist vehicles were swept away by a sudden flash flood in Thak Nala, near Chilas, resulting in tragic loss of life. According to eyewitnesses, 14 to 15 vehicles were parked near the stream when the flood hit. Despite locals shouting warnings, some tourists remained seated inside their cars.

One eyewitness mentioned that stones began falling on the vehicles, triggering panic. Yet, some people continued to record videos of the landslide rather than evacuate.

The body of a 3-year-old boy, the son of Dr. Mishaal, was recovered after being swept away in the flood at Babusar.

Rescue and Current Situation

Electric poles and many vehicles remain submerged. Local residents and rescue workers are trying to retrieve them. A destroyed coaster still contains food, water bottles, and a baby walker. Vehicles in a nearby hotel parking lot survived the flood unharmed.

Road access has been completely cut off, and several tourists are stranded. Government vehicles are also trapped due to multiple landslides across the area.

Causes of the Disaster

  • Flash floods due to monsoon rains and glacial melt are common in northern Pakistan during July–August.
  • Lack of awareness among tourists about flood-prone zones like dry riverbeds (nalas).
  • Failure to respond to local warnings quickly.
  • Focus on filming disasters instead of acting to save lives.

Precautionary Advice for Tourists

Before You Travel

  • Always check the weather for rain or flood alerts in Gilgit-Baltistan.
  • Do not park in dry stream beds or near narrow bridges.
  • Travel with licensed local guides or tour operators.
  • Avoid traveling at night in mountain regions.

During Your Trip

  • Leave the area immediately if locals warn you or if it starts raining.
  • Never stay inside a vehicle parked near a nala or riverbank.
  • Stay updated via local social media groups for real-time alerts.
  • Prioritize safety over filming or photography during natural disasters.

Call to Action for Authorities

We urge the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department and local administration to:

  • Install danger signs near high-risk zones like Thak Nala.
  • Train tourist police to alert travelers and block unsafe roads during bad weather.
  • Promote safety awareness through media and brochures.

Conclusion

This tragic incident at Thak Nala serves as a reminder that nature must be respected. While Pakistan’s northern regions offer stunning landscapes, they demand serious caution. Be informed, stay safe, and never ignore local advice.
