Pehlwani or kushti is a Pakistani game similar to wrestling, The game is popular in Pakistan, India & Bangladesh. Kushti was developed in the Mughal Era in India *15th to 18th centuty) throgh the game also existed earlier as malla-yuddha and Persian Varzesh-e Pahlavani.
The player of the games are called Pehlwans, while the experienced pehalwans become teachers are known as Ustaad, or guru for Hindu teachers.
The undefeated champions are referred to as Rustan like Rustam of Punjab or in India Rustam-i-Hind, meaning “the Rostam of India”, denoting Rostam the hero of the Persian Shahnameh.
Through time Western training methods and nomenclature from Iran and Europe were introduced into Pehlwani. Wrestling competitions, known as dangals, held in villages can have their own rules variations. Usually a win is awarded by decision from the panel of judges, knockout, stoppage or submission.
