Punjab Floods 2025: Heavy Rains and Rising Rivers Affect Millions
Continuous monsoon rains across Punjab have worsened flooding, displacing thousands of families and submerging hundreds of villages. Rivers Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab have overflowed, leading to devastation across central Punjab. On average, floodwater in agricultural lands takes 7–15 days to drain, while in low-lying urban zones, it may remain stagnant for several weeks due to poor drainage.
Lahore
Distance from Lahore (city center): 0 km
Torrential rain in Lahore caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, including the emergency ward roof leakage at Jinnah Hospital. In Chuhang, floodwater levels reduced, but private housing societies remain inundated. Rural roads near Phoolnagar and Sarai Mughal were severely damaged, leaving many villages disconnected.
Chiniot
Distance from Lahore: 150 km (approx. 3.5 hours by road)
The Chenab River overflowed in Chiniot, submerging villages and destroying standing crops. Floodwater may take up to 10–12 days to recede depending on rainfall in upstream areas.
Wazirabad
Distance from Lahore: 100 km (approx. 2.5 hours by road)
Heavy rains worsened flooding as Chenab’s surge entered rural areas. Croplands were destroyed, and road links were washed away. Relief operations are ongoing.
Gujrat
Distance from Lahore: 140 km (approx. 3 hours by road)
Gujrat’s low-lying areas suffered heavy flooding. Dozens of families were evacuated by boats to safer areas. Fields and livestock were badly affected.
Nankana Sahib
Distance from Lahore: 75 km (approx. 1.5 hours by road)
A breach in the protective embankment near Hathar village threatened to flood nearby residential areas. Villagers fear stagnant water may remain for over 2 weeks.
Narowal
Distance from Lahore: 130 km (approx. 3 hours by road)
A canal breach near MR Link embankment caused water to enter nearby settlements. At least 20 villages risk submergence. Evacuations are underway.
Other Affected Regions
- Jhelum (170 km from Lahore): Streams and nullahs overflowed; children trapped on a madrasa roof were rescued.
- Multan (340 km from Lahore): Floodwater entered Shujabad tehsil, affecting over 140 villages.
- Khairpur (730 km from Lahore): A tragic boat accident occurred in the Indus River, but 9 people were saved.
Impact of Overflowing Rivers
At Baloki on Ravi and Ganda Singh Wala on Sutlej, flood levels reached extremely high danger marks. Reports confirm:
- River Chenab: 1169 villages affected
- River Ravi: 478 villages affected
- River Sutlej: 391 villages affected
Tourists & Travel Impact
The regular trains, transport is operating, however many flights have cancelled due to rains in Lahore and Islamabad and some have also been cancelled due to no or low passenger count. It is ideal to be cauttion and travel with some advance information. Specially in Lahore Nankana & Islamabad region. The northern areas region is also impacted due to its on floods and land slides. Today even the road to Naran at Balakot is closed due to a landslide.
Internet Connectivity
Many areas of Punjab are facing difficulties in connectiong to the Internet as many celular towers have no electricity or are damaged due to rain and flood water.
